It was, all in all, a bit of a wasted journey and certainly could have been done by a lesser minister, but there were several small items of business that were dealt with in Milan as well which made it a bit less of a faff. I did have a short meeting with the Modena heir, who was a young man in somewhat of a hurry, which was not uncommon in Italy; I sometimes detected a certain exasperation as British medicine lengthened some lives. However, in this case, Francesco d’Este had some righteous concerns; he had a good reputation and was as smart as a whip, while his father was blowing money like it was going out of fashion. His mission was to try and get us to deny export credits for his father; I said we’d look at it, but in the end it was delayed so long that it was cancelled by Francesco on his succession in late 1988. Similarly, I had a quiet chat with the last scion of the Gonzagas, who was hoping somewhat wistfully for a happy event with his wife, but there were a number of small issues and for a number of reasons they could not leave Guastalla; suitably discreet medical arrangements were made and the line continued with two delightful daughters and eventually a son.
